Day 3: MCS Construction

Today our Construction students had the exciting opportunity to work alongside MCS Construction, a national leader in innovative building services solutions where people and businesses thrive.

The visit gave students a valuable insight into the construction industry through a combination of presentations, career advice, and practical, hands-on activities. MCS shared information about the wide range of opportunities available within the sector, including future work experience placements and apprenticeship pathways.

As part of the session, students were challenged to design their own floor plans, carefully considering important features such as power supplies, windows, and room layouts. Once their plans were complete, they moved on to the practical stage, using straws and connectors to transform their ideas into physical structures.

The activity encouraged teamwork, communication, and problem-solving skills, all of which are essential within the construction industry. During the build, students encountered an unexpected challenge when some of the yellow straws were found to be defective, meaning sections had to be dismantled and rebuilt. While frustrating at first, this became an excellent learning experience, highlighting the importance of resilience and adaptability when dealing with real-life construction issues.

Despite the setback, the students remained positive and worked hard to overcome the problem, producing some fantastic designs by the end of the session.

A huge thank you to MCS Construction for delivering such an engaging and inspiring workshop. The morning was a great success and provided our students with valuable industry knowledge, practical experience, and motivation for future careers in construction.
